Pasture Raised Hogs - DEPOSIT
This listing is a DEPOSIT ONLY for hogs. There are 16 hogs available for purchases, first come, first serve basis.
The remaining balance will be owed on pickup. Hogs will not be frozen and must be picked up on the specific pick up date which will be around the first week of December 2024. Any hogs that are not picked up on the assigned date will be sold within 24 hours and any deposit will be lost. Deposits are not refundable or transferrable. If you use the “pay in store” code, all deposits must be made within one week or your preorder will be cancelled.
Because of the variable cost of feed and ultimate weight of animal, we are unable to give an estimate of the final price.
Mangalitsa/Tamworth/Pietrain Cross-Bred
What does this mean? These have a Tamworth dad and moms that are either Mangelitsa or Pietrain. These hogs are heritage breeds which are meant to live outdoors in all seasons, and are bred to have more fat. Imagine a world before industrial seed oils were available….people in northern climates relied on pork fat for all cooking throughout the year. It is only in modern times, that lean pork has been promoted as ideal. These hogs have tremendous flavour, created by eating greens outdoors in sunlight, and fed non-gmo barley wheat and peas, custom milled at Verner Ag Co-op.
We support local farmers. There are 3 distinct costs associated with a half hog, or whole hog order.
Farmer Fee - cost to raise the animal - feed, housing, vet etc
Abattoir fee - this is a humane process observed by a provincial meat inspector at the Birch Lake Abattoir.
Butcher fee - this is the cost to process the animal into your custom cuts at the Birch Lake Abarroir.
*** If you have the skill and will, you may opt to butcher your own hog, and if so, the carcass must be picked up on Sat Nov 30, location 815 Lorne St. Seasons Pharmacy and Culinaria.
